The IEEE 802.3av Working Group began in September 2006 with the following objectives. The standard was completed in 2009. The group defined an Ethernet fiber access technology that uses a point-to-multipoint topology. It has a Physical Layer (PHY) interface capable of delivering better or equal to 10-12 Bit Error Rate at 10Gbps. It provides for 10Gbps downstream and 1Gbps upstream. In addition the standard defines an additional PHY that provides 10Gbps downstream and 10Gbps upstream. Both PHYs are defined for single mode fiber. Finally the Working Group defined 3 optical power budgets with a split ratio of 1:16 and 1:32 and distances of at least 10km and up to 20km.
